An amazing short music video directed by Leif Eriksson and Lisa Thornqvist, written by Thornqvist and starring Thornqvist and David Shawn McKnight. According to Thornqvist, this video is based on the life of an inmate in Argentina, where she lived for a while and got to sing in a prison.
This music video takes the viewer into the Wild West and is basically separated into two sequences that alternate between them. One involves Thornqvist herself dressed up as an angel and singing the title song in a variety of environments that include a prison and a church. The other is a story that follows a gunslinger (McKnight) who commits a terrible crime and must seek redemption.
The film has a lot to be proud of in its four-and-a-half-minute duration. To begin with, there is the song, a beautiful and emotional piece that is wonderfully sung by Thornqvist. Her terrific vocals and the guitar and drums dominate the audio of this video and make it an absolute pleasure to listen to. Concentrating on the visuals now, the mise-en-scene recreates the Wild West very convincingly, with realistic clothing and buildings and there are horses and guns, all of which look great thanks to the cinematography. As for the story, it is quite intriguing and dramatic, about a man who is in danger of having his life destroyed and finds peace. It should probably be mentioned that the narrative part has no audio whatsoever, nevertheless it is easy to comprehend what is going on.
This video is a joy to watch and listen to, with visuals and an audio that accompany each other very effectively. The film is captivating from start to finish and it would be hard to think of any way in which the filmmakers could had made the viewing experience better.
The performances by Thornqvist and McKnight contribute significantly in adding value to this video. Of course Thornqvist has her singing voice, however her appearance is also important. Dressed as an angel and looking beautiful, she gives the impression that she is a guardian angel to the struggling protagonist of the story. Going to the story's protagonist, McKnight plays the part well, portraying a man who goes downhill and redeems himself.
The narrative is a crime story and appears to focuse primarily on forgiveness, on finding redemption following a vile deed. Religion is also part of the plot and it is evidently present in the song's lyrics that are also about hope and struggle.
Both the song and the visuals are strong on their own. Combining them makes this music video a mesmerising experience that deserves commendations for the creativity that was applied to it.
